Tips for a Sustainable Convention

Before You Arrive

Avoid purchasing travel size toiletries; instead, purchase reusable travel size containers.
Carpool to the airport with other colleagues from your institution, or institutions in the area; use public airport services in your area (Check out http://www.skyharbor.com/index.html for airport transportation).
Calculate the impact of your trip on the environment and purchase pollution offsets.
Bring a reusable water bottle and/or coffee mug.
Bring your own convention bag.

During Your Stay

Request that housekeeping does not throw away your partially used amenities; rather replenish as needed.
Request that the front desk does not put your key cards in envelopes.
Request to have your hotel room folio sent electronically only.
Turn lights off when you are not in your room and request that housekeeping does not leave lights, TV and/or radio on with turndown service.
Reuse your towels/bed linens in the hotel.
If you are not going to utilize the daily newspaper that is delivered to your room request at check-in to not have it left at your door.
Limit the length of your showers in the hotel.
Turn off AC/heat before you leave the hotel room.
Unplug electronics in your hotel room such as cell phone chargers and laptops.
Eat at local establishments that are known for purchasing organic and local foods or eat at minority-owned franchises.
Purchase fair trade coffee.
If you choose to leave the convention center, walk and avoid using taxis.
Encourage your Commission, Standing Committees, and State/International Division delegation not to purchase trinkets and to limit their paper handouts.
Don’t take more food than what you are going to eat at receptions.
If you are presenting at the convention, do not bring handouts—collect e-mail addresses for people who would like the handouts or post the materials on your Web site.
Use recycled containers in the facility for trash: bottles, paper, and plastics.
Wear layered clothing at meeting and convention site as room temperatures may vary for each individual’s comfort.
Use the "Do Not Disturb" sign on your room door and call housekeeping to skip your room if you do not need fresh sheets daily, but every third or fourth day.
