How You Doin’?” It may sound like
a simple three-word greeting, but at Global Spectrum venues throughout
North America it has become the culture of the workplace for thousands
of our employees. Since the program’s introduction four years ago, it
has become the way we interact with the customers and how our employees
interact with each other, creating a fun, motivated, and enthusiastic
workplace.
“Our new approach begins with a familiar greeting, ‘How
You Doin’?,’ but it’s a great deal more than just a question. It’s a
phrase that empowers Global Spectrum personnel to treat customers and
their fellow employees in the same way they would want to be treated.
‘How You Doin’? is the foot in the door that eventually leads to the
ultimate sports and entertainment experience for our customers and
employees. It’s also a way of measuring how we are performing as a
company,” said Global Spectrum Chief Operating Officer John Page.
A friendly greeting has evolved as the face of Global
Spectrum, a subsidiary of Philadelphia-based sports and entertainment
firm Comcast-Spectacor. Employees are rewarded for exceptional
performance, superior customer relations and perfect practice of the Top
10 Principles – Customer First; Golden Rule; Listen; Think “Yes”; Be
Professional; Positive Attitude; 24-Hour Rule; Everybody Sells;
Enthusiasm; and Do It Now.
Performance
Management
In addition to the “How You Doin’?” culture, Global Spectrum employees
participate in a Performance Management program designed to help them
shape their own goals and to map their future career path within the
company. Employees meet with their direct reports quarterly to ensure
on-going communication that find ways to match the goals of the employee
with the goals of the company – Increase Profitability; Quality Products
and Services; Maximize Customer Experience; and Foster A Positive Work
Environment.
As a result of Performance Management, Global Spectrum identifies
potential new general manager candidates for its facilities and educates
them through an internal Mentoring Program.
Through the corporate resources of its parent company, Comcast-Spectacor,
employees on the “GM Track” have access to the most experienced and
recognized professionals in the industry.
“Our program’s mission is to educate and continue the
growth of employees with high potential, providing them with diversified
training to cultivate future company leaders,” added Page.
Global Spectrum utilizes the Wachovia Center, the
company’s flagship arena, as a training ground for the field.
“Many Global Spectrum general managers, assistant
general managers and marketing directors have come through the Wachovia
Complex,” said Page. “As
one of the busiest facilities in the world, the Wachovia Center provides
a tremendous training ground for our employees.
“While working in Philadelphia at our flagship arena,
these individuals have access to all of the touring events, the
promoters, the artists and shows that they may encounter in their own
markets some day,” added Page. “Here they have the opportunity to
nurture those future relationships while learning the basics of
operating a multi-purpose sports and entertainment venue.”
Communication efforts linking all Global Spectrum
employees are enhanced with an exclusive Intranet (Team Comcast) to
inform and share ideas with each venue under the Global Spectrum Family
of Facilities.
“With more than 70 facilities throughout North America,
the Team Comcast intranet allows us to share files, videos, messages and
special opportunities for all of our employees,” said Page. “It’s a
great benefit to Global Spectrum employees that is provided by our
parent company Comcast-Spectacor and its affiliation within the Comcast
Family of Companies.”
Guaranteed Growth
Global Spectrum is one of the rare companies in the public assembly
facility management field that can guarantee growth to its employees,
whether it be at a sports or entertainment venue or in a convention
center. When a job becomes available in any of the many facilities the
company manages, internal employees from within the organization are the
first to be considered for the position. They’re at the front of the
line because of the many employee enrichment and development workplace
programs at Global Spectrum-managed facilities.
“As Global Spectrum continues to evolve, we are
constantly looking for future leaders of our industry,” said Page.
“We’re very fortunate that we can provide growth opportunities for our
employees.”
“Global Spectrum is a great place to work,” added Page.
“We really rely on a motto from Comcast-Spectacor Pr esident
Peter Luukko and Comcast-Spectacor Chairman Ed Snider who remind us
‘Have Fun and Make Money.’ You can’t have fun if you’re not making money
and you can’t make money if you’re not having fun. It’s how we do it.”
Comcast-Spectacor (www. comcast-spectacor.com) is the
Philadelphia-based sports and entertainment company which owns the
Philadelphia Flyers (NHL), the Philadelphia 76ers (NBA), the
Philadelphia Phantoms (AHL), the two arenas in which their teams play,
the Wachovia Center and Wachovia Spectrum, four Flyers Skate Zone
com-munity ice skating and hockey rinks and Comcast SportsNet
Philadelphia. In addition, Comcast-Spectacor is also the principal owner
of Global Spectrum, the fastest growing firm in the public assembly
management field with more than 70 facilities throughout the United
States and Canada; Ovations Food Services, a food and beverage service
provider; New Era Tickets, a ticketing and marketing company for public
assembly facilities; Front Row Marketing Services, a commercial rights
sales company; and 3601 Creative Group, a full- service in-house
advertising agency. In a partnership with Disson Skating, Comcast-Spectacor
annually produces 10 nationally televised figure skating spectaculars on
NBC.
