Auditorium-Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame, IN.

What do you listen to in your car right now? (artist/title - CD, MP3
player, satellite?)
On my I-pod I listen to the Eagles, Van Halen, ZZ Top, Journey and
many groups from the 80’s and 90’s. In the car I listen to National Public
Radio (NPR).
What is the weirdest event you ever had in a facility you’ve worked in?
Strangest merchandise? Strangest anything?
A few (+/-10) years ago I was working with our university client to
put on a student association concert. The students had booked Courtney Love
and her band Hole. As I advanced the show, I learned that Ms. Love would on
occasion perform topless. Prior to the show, I met with Ms. Love and the
tour manager and explained to them that this was not acceptable and that if
she chose to perform topless that she would be arrested when she came off
stage at the end of the set. Ms. Love assured me that “she would not take
her top off.” So the show goes on and late into her set Ms. Love suggests to
all the ladies in the house that they should take off their tops. So, many
of the ladies did as directed and we ended up spending the better part of
the next week answering media inquiries on HOW we could have let this
happen? With this situation, I learned a valuable lesson on listening to
what somebody is really trying to tell you!
What is a motto, inspiration or quote you try to live by?
“Discipline: doing what you have to do, and doing it as well as you possibly
can, and doing it that way all the time.” –Bobby Knight
Why did you choose to pursue the CFE?
As I became more involved with the Association, many of the people
that I looked up to, Joe Floreano, Harold Hansen, Doris Stovall, Denny
Magruder, and many more, had attained their CFE’s. I wanted to be just like
them.
What has been a benefit or is a benefit of having a CFE?
The CFE designation is like having the venue management version of the Good
Housekeeping seal of approval. Working with elected officials on major
projects, the CFE designation reflects a level of credibility that I have
the experience and that I am qualified to be trusted with one of our
community’s largest assets, the Memorial Coliseum.
Would you recommend
attaining a CFE to other colleagues? Why?
Yes! I have encouraged many people to apply for their CFE. It is one of the
best career development options available.
What couldn’t you live without?
My family, Ann, Ashley, Christopher, Krystal and the grandkids.

What’s your most prized possession?
My most prized possession is my 1974 Triumph TR-6 convertible. The car is
known as “Baby” and I keep her covered, warm and dry in the garage. I have
the grandkids trained, much to my wife Ann’s chagrin, to talk to Baby as
they come and go through the garage.
What’s your favorite place on earth?
The beach at Gulf Shores, Alabama. We have been regulars for over 30
years.
What’s your most favorite moment in history?
The day someone invented red wine!
What’s the one
thing most people would be surprised to learn about you?
I think that most people would be surprised to hear that I am an avid
gardener. I grow roses and I can can a mean tomato. Working in my garden is
my therapy. Ann frequently reminds me that I need all the therapy that I can
get.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
The most important thing to remember is to have fun. If whatever you are
doing is not making you happy, then do something different!
