Well, it’s been an exciting year and one that I
will certainly remember forever! As Robyn Williams and every President
before her has said, “It really does go by fast.” I think it is because we
as volunteer members are always working on so many initiatives that it seems
there just isn’t time to get everything completed that you would like to in
one year.
The good news is that the Senior Officers have been
working very closely together to bring conclusion to prior initiatives and
to ensure that those in process will continue to evolve. We have taken a
shared approach in our leadership to ensure continuity for the association
and our membership, and I promise you are in good hands going forward! Here
are some of the results from the work of the Association’s Committees,
Schools, Councils and Boards and it is not inclusive of everything. It’s no
wonder I am tired!
| • |
The Research and
Knowledge Advancement Council was created and facilitated two
studies, the Convention Center 2008 Operational Expense Benchmarking
Report and the 2009 Salary Survey. |
| • |
The Policy Manual had to
be revised and reorganized as a result of by-law changes. The new
document was reviewed and approved and will continue to be updated
as needed. |
| • |
The Young Professionals
Committee was established and a new category of membership was
approved for them to bridge the attrition gap once they no longer
qualify for student membership. Their first project is a new web
page on the IAAM website dedicated to resources for young
professionals. |
| • |
The Diversification
Committee developed a new Mentoring Program Handbook and worked with
the CFE Board to establish criteria for awarding CFE Points for
participation in the Mentor Program. |
| • |
A committee was formed
to evaluate the branding of our Annual Conference which resulted in
the adoption of IAAM VenueConnect as our permanent conference brand. |
| • |
The Board of Directors
voted to move forward with the new social networking platform. As a
result of that action IAAM VenueNet launches this month! |
| • |
We presented a one-half
day seminar on IAAM China that was attended by 22 Beijing venue and
governmental representatives interested in learning about IAAM.
Following the trip, we received an invitation from the Beijing
Olympic Development Association to participate in a new forum they
are developing. IAAM is providing five speakers to participate in
the August event.

| • |
We published the 2nd
Edition of the Textbook and were able to provide Companion Teaching
Materials in time for the January semester. |
| • |
The last “biggie” is the
potential name change of the association to “International
Association of Venue Managers.” Results from the recent survey
indicate an 83% approval rating which is astoundingly high. You will
have an opportunity to vote on this by-law issue in the very near
future. Please let your voice be heard and cast your electronic
vote! |
I can honestly say that
as each of these actions came forward this year, we have been “Mindful of
Yesterday, Focused on Today, and Preparing for Tomorrow.”
Thank you to the many members who have given their time
and talents to these and many other projects. The staff, leadership and
association is fortunate to have you!
