The International Association of Venue Managers (IAVM), the Academy for Venue Safety and Security (AVSS) and the National Weather Center have teamed up to provide a unique learning experience in severe weather preparedness for public assembly venues. This two-day workshop will provide you with the tools for development of your severe preparedness plan. You will learn from experts as you work through foundational classes in weather forecasting, risk assessment, legal consideration and crowd dynamics - all set at the National Weather Center in Norman, Oklahoma.

The National Weather Center houses a unique confederation of University of Oklahoma, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and state organizations that work together in partnership to improve understanding of events occurring in Earth’s atmosphere over a wide range of time and space scales.


Who Should Attend:
Managers, Assistant Managers, and those responsible for guest safety at all types of public assembly venues and events around the world will find this course extremely valuable in protecting lives and mitigating injuries. Attendance at the AVSS Core and Advance program is NOT a prerequisite.

Overview Description:
The AVSS Severe Weather Preparedness Course is an intensive 2-day curriculum, where participants will learn how to develop a severe weather preparedness plan for all types of public assembly venues, fairs, expositions, and other events where large crowds assemble. Participants will be introduced to short fused severe weather threats at large venues of all kinds and develop the skills necessary to develop venue preparedness plans.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of the Severe Weather Preparedness Advance Workshop, participants will:

Be able to assess the severe weather threats that could impact their public assembly facility or outdoor event and what preparedness activities they need to undertake in order to protect the safety of guests, performers, and employees.
Understand the basic structure of severe weather preparedness plans and to begin plan drafts for tornadoes, hail, straight line damaging winds, flash floods and lightning.
Learn the basics of severe weather risk preparedness and plans to mitigate injury and the loss of life to patrons and participants attending venues of all kinds.

Prerequisites:
Completion of FEMA Emergency Management Institute (EMI) courses for National Incident Management System (NIMS) and Incident Command system (ICS) or recent equivalent classes / training. A copy of certificate of completion is requested at course registration. Alternately, a copy or scan of your certificate can be sent to security@iavm.org, or mailed to AVSS, 635 Fritz Drive, Suite 100, Coppell, TX 75019. Copies of certificates of completion submitted for Core Training need not be re-submitted.

Payments By Purchase Order:
To apply using a company or organization purchase order, please provide the purchase order number in the box provided in the payment section of the application form. Upon acceptance, an invoice will be sent to you for the deposit and subsequently the balance due.

A credit card is also required for purchase order application. It will not be charged unless payment of invoice(s) is not received and the account become delinquent. Contact security@iavm.org for assistance or additional information.

Payment / Cancellation Policy
All applications require a $500 (U.S. funds) deposit upon submission. Accepted applications must pay the remaining balance no later than 45 days before school begins. For cancellations made from 1 to 45 days before the 1st day of class, tuition is non-refundable; for cancellations made more than 45 days before the first day of class, the $250 of the deposit is forfeited. Substitutions are not permitted at any time.

Accomodations Information

If you will be flying to the Severe Weather Planning Course, the National Weather Center (NWC) is just 25 miles south of the Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City. A shuttle is available through the National Center for Employee Development Hotel (NCED) for only $25.00 each way or there are the usual car rental agencies located at the airport.
Free shuttle transportation from the NCED to NWC will be provided each day in the morning and evening.
